Lo and behold!

Lo is short for look. Look! Behold!

To me, it sounds like a sailing term. But apparently it showed up first “in an 1808 letter in the Correspondence 1787–1870, of Queen Victoria’s lady of the bedchamber – Lady Sarah Spencer Lyttelton:

‘”Hartington… had just told us how hard he had worked all the morning… when, lo and behold! M. Deshayes himself appeared.’”

Well, lo and behold! I did not know that.

~Today, I found a spider in my bed and I squeaked. The spider promptly responded, “Oops, wrong bed”.

About bookworm4evr

I go by a lot of names, and I like poems. Maybe that's why I have the wording issue. Greening Grandemalion is my special favorite from a book called Graceling by Kristin Cashore. Jaion is my co-author. She is a very busy person. View all posts by bookworm4evr
